Is there any benefit to have dual coverage with Medicare and Medicaid in Kingston, New York?

A: Yes!  Medicare provides less comprehensive coverage than Medicaid, i.e., Medicare doesn't cover long-term care, routine dental and eye care, and hearing aids.  It will always be in your best interest to be "dual eligible" and get both Medicare and Medicaid coverage.

Medicare pays for inpatient hospital care, short-term skilled nursing facilities, home health care and hospice.  Unlike Medicaid, Medicare does not pay for long-term care.

Medicare coverage is not free.  Medicare has signfiicant deductibles, premiums and co-pays that are deducted from the beneficiary's monthly Social Security check. Although most individuals receive Medicare Part A (hospital care) without any premium, Part B of Medicare has monthly permiums and deductibles.

Medicaid genearally provides a much mroe complete benefit package than Medicare. Medicaid pays for most medical services, including long-term nursing home care and pharmaceuticals.  If your loved one suffers from a degenerative condition tha will require long-term care in a nursing facility, Medicaid will pay for those expenses.  Medicaid may be necessary to provide benefits that are not included in the Medicare program, i.e., long-term nursing home care.

Managed Long Term Care is one of the different programs through which the New York State Medicaid program pays for long-term care in both residential and community settings.  The long-term care services include home health care, adult day care and nursing home care and ancillary services, such as dentistry, optometry and eyeglasses.

An added bonus is that Medicaid will pick up the premiums, deductibles and co-pays that are deducted from the monthly Social Security benefits of a Medicare recipient.

If you qualify for both Medicaid and Medicare, it will always be in your best interests to get both coverages.
