In New York, you are not permitted to sue for a specific amount of money.
In the summons and complaint that we file for you, we do not ask for a specific dollar figure. However, during the discovery phase of your lawsuit, the lawyers for the doctor will serve a demand for the dollar amount that you are seeking in the lawsuit. Our response to this demand will seek a specific dollar amount, but the figure usually intentionally high and is not the true value of your case.
