A study has recently found people who maintain a diet that contains certain omega-3 fatty acids can lower their risk of developing dementia. The study tracked more than 2,000 seniors and found that those seniors whose diet contained a substantial amount of omega-3 rich oil fish lowered their risk of dementia.
The researchers found that certain fatty omega-3 acids are better than others. Specifically, they found that DHA (docosahexanoic acid) and EPA (eiosapentaenoic acid) are the best fatty acids for your brain heath. These acids are found in salmon, sardines, halibut, mackerel and tuna.
The researchers in this study followed 2,363 people; none of them had dementia when the study’s research began. The researchers came to their conclusions after having the men and women fill out a 61-question questionnaire on their diet and every eighteen months the men and women were required to undergo neurological exams. 406 men and women were diagnosed with dementia, during the four and a half year period that the researchers followed them.
After compiling all the information, the researchers determined that the when EPA and DHA intake increased a person had a twenty to thirty percent smaller chance of suffering from dementia. It is noted that the researchers did not factor to their conclusions a participant’s intake of supplements nor did they examine how these fatty acids affect dementia.
More information needs to be learned on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Approximately, 5.4 million people in the US suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, sixty to eighty percent of dementia cases are related to Alzheimer’s disease. With these numbers it shows how important it could be to learn what could help people decrease their risks of suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
This study is just another step towards that goal. Everyone needs to know what he or she is eating on a daily basis because certain foods could help your health for the future.
