Going to the dentist can be a very nerve racking experience, even for the most simple of procedures.  Regardless, dental patients expect that their dentist will provide them with dental care that meets the appropriate standard.

Root canals are one of the most common dental procedures.  However, there are numerous things that can go wrong.  If you have undergone a substandard root canal, and an injury resulted, you may be entitled to compensation for medical malpractice damages.  Substandard root canals can cause you pain or tooth loss.

During a negligent root canal procedure, a dentist may:

  • Break a tooth
  • Break a sharp instrument in the tooth, leaving it embedded or protruding
  • Break the bone surrounding the tooth
  • Cause infection
  • Fail to clean the site of the root canal
  • Fail to fill a canal
  • Force root canal material outside the tooth or tissue
  • Leave material that is bacteria-ridden in the tooth or protruding into nearby tissue
  • Overextending an instrument outside the tooth, resulting in injury to the bone or soft tissue
  • Overfill a canal
  • Perforate a tooth structure or the soft tissue surrounding the tooth

If you have been injured do to root canal malpractice, you may be suffering from:

  • Tooth loss
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Bone loss
  • Destruction of soft tissues
  • Infection to the soft tissue or bone
  • Irritation of the nerves
  • Lifelong injury
  • Nerve injury
  • Severe inflammation
  • Severe swelling
  • Severe medical problems
  • Severe pain

Dentists who are inexperienced, or fail to do pre-surgery preparations, can cause their patients to suffer from lasting damage and potentially necessitate further dental work.
