Risks Of Surgery Can Be Causes Of Death

Surgery

Pain, blood clots, fatigue, pneumonia, partial lung collapse, nausea, sore throat, anesthesia side effects, atrophy, infection, confusion, among others are common risks that patients face when deciding to undergo surgery.

The experienced Kingston medical malpractice attorney knows this and so should every doctor and surgeon. Prior to surgery, the team treating the patient should explain the possibility that any one or more of these complications can happen.

A patient’s surgical care starts long before the procedure and continues long after. Surgeons and other medical professionals are trained to look for the presence of the above complications during the patient’s post surgical care.

Unfortunately, many medical professionals fail to diagnose those conditions or at least fail to timely diagnose those problems. It is not hard to imagine what happens when a doctor fails at such. In fact, hundreds of thousands of patients die every year from infections and other medical errors that were preventable. Infections can lead to a severe reduction in blood pressure. Blood clots can lead to a heart attack or stroke, both of which can be deadly. Untreated infections can also eventually lead to organ failure.

Failing to manage the risks of surgery can amount to negligence. Medical professionals can be held liable for this negligence if the failure caused the patient injury and damages. Medical bills, rehabilitation costs, lost wages, permanent disability, lost future income, pain and suffering, are all things that can be compensated for.

So as you see, even though a patient may have been told in advance that complications can arise, it does not mean that complications should have happened. There is a big difference between an unpreventable complication and a preventable medical error.

After having surgery, patients should think about calling an attorney if a stroke, heart attack, bleeding, blood clotting, or pulmonary embolism occurs. Any adverse reaction at all should make the patient think twice, and consider the possibility that a doctor’s error caused the harm.

Remember, a doctor does not have to admit to making a mistake, so it is possible that he/she knows what happened but has not told you. It may take a rigorous investigation by a competent and professional attorney in order to discover the negligence.

Even though advances in medicine are made every year, basic and deadly mistakes continue to happen. Surgical instruments and other objects such as sponges, needles, and gloves are left inside of patients during surgery. Inside the patient’s body, those items remain for years sometimes.

Since all medical malpractice lawsuits must be started within a certain time after the doctor committed the mistake, sick patients cannot wait long before seeing an experienced attorney.
